How Open Source helped me to get a High Paying job
Are you interested in becoming a remote software developer? If so, you may find inspiration from my journey into my current company, 'Backpack' . Let’s see the timeline carefully.
1. Moving Onward and Upward: Why I Resigned from My Past Company?
rewinding the clock around 7 months, I was in my 4cr offer that I have been pretty transparent with, on this channel. Around September of the last year (2022) I completed my one year in this company, the 4 cr one. Wanted to transition to a web3 company, learned about it and started interviewing.
2. A Different Interview Experience
up until this point, I went through traditional interviews, going through a round or two and getting a yes or no, whenever I got an interview I usually got into the company. Subsequently cleared an interview of a web3 company and they were offering a pretty good amount to transition from the current org. Resigned from the 4cr company and had one month of cool-off period. But new experiences happened after that...
3. How Things Changed
This is the most interesting part of the journey.
Backpack, the current I am working at was closed-sourced up until this point. But on the 1st of October Backpack went open-source, I saw this as a very big opportunity as Backpack was a very reputed startup everyone was talking around.
now,
only 15 days were remaining for me to join the other company, so I knew in these 15 days I have to contribute heavily. Being on my notice period I was still putting in 8 hours of work day at the original company and parallelly made contributions to Backpack. You can check out my contributions in the backpack repository.
4. Getting Reached Out
The number of contributions I made to the backpack repository was good enough to grab the attention of the maintainers. Thus, Armani, Founder and CEO of the Backpack, reached out to me on the 6th of October. This was the moment I knew good things are going to happen from this point. I got an offer from Backpack within 24hrs after getting on an informal meeting with Amani and other members of the Backpack team.
There is a very interesting event @7:41 of the video.
5. Conclusion
In open-source, contributions are all that matters, neither your time zone, your accent, nor which college you went to. Contribute as much as you can!
Contributing to open source is a great skill, the earlier you can inculcate it the better. Start contributing to open source and it will come back to you in one form or another.
